PSI CONGRESS: STOP VOILENCE AGAINST DEMONSTRATORS

On 26 September 2007 the 28th PSI Congress in Vienna accepted an emergency resolution on the recent situation in Myanmar.

“According to latest news reports from Myanmar several thousand monks and other protesters have begun new marches in Rangoon despite a bloody crackdown by police. Police beat and arrested demonstrators and fired warning shots.

The PSI Congress strongly condemns these actions and calls on the regime to stop these abuses against the people and workers from Myanmar. The people and workers have every right to exercise their freedom to associate and other democratic rights from which they are deprived for much to long. We repeat our demands to free all political prisoners, including workers and trade union leaders who are detained.

The PSI Congress calls upon the international community not to stand aside, but take concrete actions towards a free and democratic Myanmar.
PSI will write to the Government of Myanmar to demand compliance with all ILO conventions and respect basic rights from workers and trade unions.

The PSI Congress whishes to express its solidarity with the people and workers from Myanmar in these difficult days.”
